What You Need To Know About Your Rights as a Casual Employee

There are several different types of employment arrangements under Australia’s workplace laws. One of the most common types that students work under is casual employment. Casual jobs are defined as jobs that usually:

  • are short-term or temporary

  • involve irregular hours

  • aren't guaranteed to be ongoing

  • provide extra hourly rate as they don't provide paid holiday leave or sick leave.

Generally speaking, casual employees are employed on an hourly, daily or weekly basis without any commitment – from the employee or the employer – that the job is permanent or guaranteed.

STEM + X Webinar Series: Science

28 February

Science careers are more than just lab coats and experiments. The truth is, science is a really broad area to work in. People who have a science degree can work in government, in business, with the environment, or anywhere. Often without a lab in sight.

Join this free webinar to explore how you can combine a science degree with your ‘X’, which is your passion, another area or a big goal.

It’s Careers with STEM’s winning formula: STEM + X, where STEM is science, technology, engineering or maths, and X is up to you!

University of Sydney - Understanding Method Design and Data Collection - Online Lesson for Science Extension HSC

26 February

HSC students explore the best scientific practice when collecting data for the HSC Science Extension course - what to consider when formulating a research question, the "how to" of experimental design, and what statistics are important to consider before commencing data collection.

There will be an opportunity for you and your students to hear from and meet our statistics demonstrators. Our demonstrators are honours and postgraduate students with majors in mathematics who readily use statistics in their own research practice. In addition to an understanding of statistical theory, they will provide research advice and inspiration from their own research areas.

By the time your students leave, they should feel confident stepping out into their own exciting dive into authentic scientific research.
